Barefoot Travellers top tips for the perfect Cayman Islands Honeymoon

The Cayman Islands, made up of the 3 sister islands of Grand Cayman, Little Cayman and Cayman Brac is a truly idyllic honeymoon destination. Here are a selection of our top tips to help you plan the perfect honeymoon escape to this Caribbean paradise.

Where are The Cayman Islands?
Located just one hour south of Miami, flight time from the UK is approximately 10.5 hours, straight into Grand Caymans International airport. British Airways is currently the only carrier to offer a direct service four times weekly from London (Heathrow) to Grand Cayman on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays (note, there is an intermediate stop in Nassau, Bahamas). Onward travel to Little Cayman or Cayman Brac is via an internal hopper flight, just 40 minutes in duration.

When to go:
The islands enjoy year round daily temperatures of around 25-30 degrees. The summer months (May to October) are also considered to be the rainy season, however showers are brief.

Barefoot Traveller’s Top Tip: Peak season runs from Mid-December to Mid April (the winter months), so we recommend couples looking for a more intimate escape (not to mention the lower season rates) should avoid these busy peak times.

Where to Stay:
A wide range of accommodation options are available, and whether you choose to spend your honeymoon in the lap of luxury at one of Grand Cayman’s upscale resorts, or simply relax in romantic seclusion away from it all at a cozy beach bungalow in Little Cayman or Cayman Brac, no matter where you go you will find the warm, hospitality and high end service that Cayman is renowned for.

Spend some time in Grand Cayman, the largest and most glamorous of the three islands. The island’s glitziest address is Seven Mile Beach (which is actually only 5.5 miles long!), where you will find some of the islands most luxurious properties, including the Westin Casuarina and The Ritz Carlton, top restaurants, casino’s and more.

A short 40 minute hopper flight will take you to the sister islands of Little Cayman and Cayman Brac, for a completely different side to Cayman which should not be missed. Little Cayman, with a population of just 150, offers a serene sanctuary for wildlife and for divers, is the site of the Bloody Bay Wall Marine Park (regularly voted amongst the top dive site in the world). Cayman Brac, by comparison, is also a haven for wildlife, but unlike the complete flatness of Little Cayman, is celebrated for its craggy Bluffs and explorable caves. Recommended properties for your romantic escape include Brac Reef Beach Resort, a secluded island paradise renowned for diving but perfect for both divers and non divers alike, and the Southen Cross Club, offering laid back sophistication and a welcoming embrace.

Barefoot Traveller’s top tip: To enjoy the prime location of Seven Mile Beach without the premium price tag, consider staying at Sunshine Suites, a wonderful boutique style property that offers the best in four star elegance, and best of all enjoys a superb location along Seven Mile Beach (sharing the same stretch of beach as neighboring Ritz Carlton).

Activities
Renowned for its white sand beaches, and warm crystal clear waters, Cayman Islands is so much more than just a beach destination, and there are an array of experiences, both active and relaxing, for those looking for the ultimate honeymoon destination.

Here are just some of our Barefoot Traveller top picks of the many great Cayman experiences that await you:

World Class Diving
There’s no two ways about it, The Cayman Islands are simply a diver’s paradise, with a range of dive experiences to suit all levels of expertise. Expect to find incredible visibility, abundant marine life, stunning variety from colourful coral gardens to plunging walls (the most famous of which is the aforementioned Bloody Bay Wall, which drops vertically to thousands of metres), and a very high quality of instruction, equipment and boats. If you are beginners, why not opt for a honeymoon with a difference, and learn to dive together, earning your PADI Open Water Certification along the way.

Blue Iguana Encounter
No trip to Grand Cayman is complete without a visit to the Blue Iguana Recovery Programme at the QEII Botanic Park. These fascinating indigenous reptiles are unique to Grand Cayman and have been brought back from extinction through the efforts of this breeding programme, now free to roam around this picturesque 16 hectare park.

Visit Stingray City
An exhilarating one of a kind adventure that will see you getting up close and personal with friendly southern stingrays! Take a boat trip to this world famous sand bar where up to 2 dozen ‘tame’ stingrays will surround you. A variety of tours are available to cater for divers and non-divers alike. It is even suitable for non-swimmers with depths ranging from 3 ft to the 4ft shallow dive site, described by National Geographic as one of the best shallow dives in the world.

Take to the Skies
For the very best view of the island (and the very best in local knowledge) consider a Helicopter Tour of the island for a unique birds eye view. Thanks to the crystal clear waters, it’s not uncommon to spot turtles, stingray and other marine life from the air, and you’ll get a view unlike any other. A range of touring options are available, and top of our list for the perfect honeymoon excursion is a romantic trip for two to a remote sandbar, where you can set down at sunset for a glass of champagne.

Culture & Cuisine
With over 100 nationalities amongst the population of Cayman, its no surprise that this results in a varitable melting pot of culture and mouthwatering cuisines. Enjoy candlelit bistro’s, elegant oceanfront or beach dining, or more rustic surrounds at one of the over 150 restaurants representing just about every type of international cuisine. A must to sample is the local Caymanian fare (Conch – a local shellfish – is a must to sample whilst you at in Cayman, as is the local beer CayBrew).
